Shooting on the SLR

A few months ago I got a Chinon CE-4 film camera, the first camera Chinon made with a Pentax K mount a lens system I already had lenses for. When I was researching cameras I wanted one that was reliable, especially as friends have had film cameras that haven’t been reliable. Additionally, I wanted to get something not everyone had and I hadn’t heard of Chinon before so this camera seemed like the perfect fit. Shooting on an SLR is a lot more predictable coming from digital cameras knowing you can rely on the exposure meter, shutter speeds etc.

After writing the previous 35mm film post I knew I wanted to be a little more considered with my shooting, focusing on the technical aspect of film photography. This drove me to shoot a few photos from home, something I have previously done testing lenses and trying out new cameras etc. Shooting Ilford HP5 with 50asa again meant I needed enough light to get a clean exposed shot, although now I could use my tripod to keep the camera still meaning I could have longer shutter speeds.

Here are three photos I captured just walking close to home, the first image was the hardest to get a good exposure I had to expose to the sky despite it being a darker day. With the other two shots I used a tripod to capture really sharp and precise shots I did this by using a light reader on my phone, a really good way to ensure your light meter on your camera is working precisely. The final image was my favourite I had not shot macro before but I found this lots of fun because you can compose smaller spaces and it gives more things to photograph.

Shooting on the SLR was lots of fun I am glad I am getting more and more used to it, I think it is the camera of choice for my film photography now especially as I have more lens options for this camera. Furthermore, I aim to take more photos using the SLR and shooting more revised images and not just shooting for shootings sake. From now on I am going to start scanning my own images which is exciting, I am going to start with the black and white photos and then progress into colour film.
