I was focusing on shooting black and white film at the time therefore my point and shoot was loaded with Ilford HP5, a film I have used multiple times before but never managed to expose as I’d like as it is a 50asa. With this slower speed film already loaded I decided to take my camera on all of the slopes and for multiple walks around the local area
Every year as a family we try to go away skiing together, in 2022 we got away to Austria. A place I adore because go its natural beauty as well as its cultural diversity, I have a good understanding of the German language and therefore I manage to have many conversations with local people as well as fellow snowboarders. All the times I have been away I have never taken a film camera to the slopes, I felt as though it could make for some visually striking images.

Here you can see two images that I shot on day one as you can see the location is absolutely ideal for shooting a slower film as there is a lot of white, and sun both making the scene difficult to expose. We had only stopped for a short break so I knew I didn’t have lots of time this was the main reason for shooting on the point and shoot, a camera that will need replacing (for the same) soon. Although I have shot on HP5 before I haven’t seen the highlights come out this well before I found the extra light helped a lot with this also I was so impressed with the capability of my point and shoots exposure meter. This being said in the future I plan on exposing to sky and only to sky I think this will give me more control over my photograph in post production as it will allow me to ensure the main part of my image is correctly shown.
Despite not having much time to shoot most of my images I am happy with the outcome of them, I sometimes like having a time constraint as it forces me to work harder and more efficiently allowing me to get comfortable with my ability to shoot. I will carry on shooting like this and in a few months begin to take my time more slowing my craft down trying to unveil a new side to my work.

In these two images you can see I was getting a little more comfortable with both the film and the temperamental camera, at this point I had fallen onto the camera making the battery component fly open every time I pulled the camera from my pocket. Despite this I still managed to shoot and overall I am really content with the photos I got from this Ilford HP5, I have two more rolls and a plan to take them somewhere warm!
Going forwards I am going to try and take my time shooting a little more, focusing a lot more on the technical image ensuring sharps, exposure level and even more importantly composure. Film photography is something I have really learnt to love and as I progress I not only want to shoot the photos I also want to learn more about the developing techniques of film photography and see how this will alter and change my image enhancing my image.
