Last year I shot a short video of a walk I used to frequent, up near Ambleside north of Windermere Red screes is a steep yet rewarding walk around a 20 minute accent this morning I invited a close friend Anthony to join me on this walk before I went to work. I have always loved walking up the fells this one in particular due to the dramatic 360 views at the top. Having done this walk before I knew it would be a perfect one to film especially during sunrise, we set off walking at 7am the ground was icy and air biting. Beginning the walk we were both wrapped up with it being freezing cold, nevertheless once we started walking up the steep slope our body temperatures began to rapidly climb after 5 minutes we both had stripped off to just a thin base layer.
This time in the morning the fells are commonly empty, but this morning it seemed everyone had the same idea as us. We passed several photographers as we climbed some taking photos as the sun slowly rising above Caudale Moor (the opposite fell). As we scrambled the scree slope I managed to capture some beautiful clips, shooting like this teaches me so much about exposing to the scene. I do this by using false colour on my camera this being a personal favourite feature of the Black Magic 4k. Learning to expose to a scene and not having full control of said scene has been a large learning process, previously I have always been able to add or subtract lights to capture a scene but when shooting outdoors you must succumb to the scene making exposing correctly more of a challenge.

Here is a screen grab from my camera showing false colour, a tool to help exposure levels. The way in which false colour works is by displaying the images in more noticeable colours such as pink, purple, blue, red, green etc. All these colours correlate to the exposure level showing areas of which maybe under exposed or over exposed.
Learning these techniques has enhanced my work and assists me in creating striking content although this technique is very helpful there is always scope for going against this false colour and purposely capturing under exposed shots to create a certain mood or atmosphere. Whenever I shoot interview scenes I seem to use false colour a lot more as it gives me a distinct sign where my light is affecting.
Despite all of this when shooting outside you are at the mercy of nature, this was evident when we were walking as the sun was rising I found I was having to change settings frequently to keep a consistent exposure. I will keep growing with my cinematography and use this platform to help keep track of my growth.
