Following from my first blog post I am going to show some of the black and white film rolls I have recently shot, the main reason I have been shooting on black and white film is because I wanted to focus on shooting compositions. Having shot primarily colour film I feel as though I have become a little lazy with my photography, working hard on my composition has been a fun process and I feel as though I now take my time when shooting ensuring the image is not only correctly exposed but also compositionally correct.
Capturing photographs for me is so exciting and the concept of shooting black and white has been so much fun, the first place I went with Kentmere 100asa was Ulverston. We walked to the Sir John Barrow monument, this is a 100ft tower looking over Ulverston town from the 436ft Hoad Hill. Having done this walk before and knowing that the tower is a huge spectacle I wanted to shoot this tower capturing not only its size but the beautiful nature surrounding the area.

Here are three images I took at the top of Hoad Hill, as you can clearly see the monument is an epic building in a beautiful location. Whilst taking photos up the hill I felt the sight looked similar to a film I watched years ago called Lighthouse by Robert Eggers, a phycological horror shot on black and white 35mm film. Jarin Blanschke the cinematographer did a number of things within this film to personify the building the two characters were staying, this was something I wanted to replicate in my images. I loved shooting this building as I felt it helped show me how to step back and capture a building in a different angle, clearly the image closer to the building makes it look grand. My personal favourite image of this monument is the one from more of a distance although this image makes the building look smaller it makes the viewer get more of a natural feel when seeing the monument.
The next place I shot was the Fairy Steps in Beetham, Milnthorpe; a stunning 6 mile walk around a beautiful woodland with natural stone staircase with a local legend saying if you walk the steps without touching the sides you will see a fairy will grant you a wish. As I was capturing images on this walk I found the whole woodland interesting with abandoned buildings and fascinating trees with twisting trunks.

In these images above there is clearly a natural beauty in the woodland and although shooting black and white you feel you can see the colour and what the photograph would look like in colour. This kind of photography is my personal favourite way to shoot capturing nature in its purest form, early in the morning and showing the organic beauty of untouched places with nature taking over and doing its own thing. I aim to capture more images with this natural feel to it, showing how nature can take over manmade places showing we are at the burden of nature and although we can alter it and build on top of it we cannot change it and control it.
To conclude, I am going to keep shooting on black and white film as I feel it is a format I can definitely use in the future to show a scene in a certain way emphasising light and composition. As my film photography grows I feel as though I need to keep shooting black and white so I can refer back to previous images and see my growth. Additionally, I am going to keep shooting nature showing the beauty of England especially the place I have such a connection to.
